The Gold Krugerrand from South Africa may well be the most well known gold bullion coin that you can buy. It's an extremely popular coin with both collectors and investors. For much of the seventies and eighties, you couldn't purchase a Krugerrand if you lived in a Western country like the United States. Most goods from South Africa were prohibited for import due to the country's political policies (apartheid), but once reforms were in place, this opened up the gold market for international buyers.
The original gold Krugerrand was a 1 troy oz. coin, but like many of the officially minted bullion coins today, the Krugerrand is now also available in various fractional sizes as well. You can still purchase the 1 oz coins, but now you can find 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/2 oz gold coins as well.

More about Krugerrands
The gold Krugerrand is a 22k coin, minted to a quality of 91.67 percent pure gold. The additional alloy used to keep the coin hard is copper, which gives the Krugerrand a slightly orange cast compared to other gold coins such as the US gold eagle or the Canadian Maple. It's a very pretty coin to add to your collection.
The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Paul Kruger (hence the coin's name, Krugerrand), the last president of the "South African Republic". The reverse features a springbok antelope. This antelope is one of the national symbols of South Africa.
It's important to note that when you are shopping for Krugerrands, only gold Krugerrands exist. The South African Mint Company does not and has never produced a silver Krugerrand. So beware of imitation coins if you are shopping for silver as well as gold. Any silver coin depicting the same features as a gold Krugerrand would qualify only as a "round", but even then I would be wary of buying anything trying to pass itself off as official bullion. Your best bet is to stick to the official gold Krugerrands in the size that you can afford. You can take a look at some of these great deals on Ebay for the best prices available.
